My most recent passion is natural dyes. At the Westminster College Nature Center, I maintain a large dyer's garden that I use in one of the courses I teach as well a for private use and research.
In the garden I keep polygonum tinctorium or dyer's knot weed for indigo. There is also Woad for an additional source of blue. Weld is cultivated for yellows and Coreopsis Tinctoria for orange. We also harvest and abundance of goldenrod and pokeberry from the fields for more yellows and reds.
Part of my crop is left for seed production.
In late February, I start indigo from saved seed in the Westminster College Biology Department's greenhouse.
